("Doctors' opposition riles midwives, moms,"July 29.) As with many practices in American obstetric care, there is no evidence to support it. (The Centers for Disease Control statistics mentioned in the article include all out-of-hospital births and do not accurately reflect the safety of midwife/doctor attended home births.) There have been very few studies done to investigate the safety of birth in hospital versus home. Those that have been done, show home birth to be superior. In "Safer Childbirth?" Marjory Tews found that the place of birth is not the critical factor. Rather, the birth attendant is pivotal. |
