| 'Locavores' taking root Sat, 26 Apr 2008 00:00:00 EST "Locavore" has entered the modern-day lexicon. In its simplest terms, it means eat food from where you live. A general rule: food that comes from 100 miles away or less -- like from Kevin MacRitchie's Livingston County buffalo ranch. |
| Healthy habits Sat, 26 Apr 2008 00:00:00 EST Looking for a fast and easy way to get some greens on the table besides the ubiquitous salad? Pick up a bunch of greens such as spinach, kale or broccoli rabe at the market, remove the stems and cut into strips. Then heat about 3 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet, add 2 smashed garlic cloves and a teaspoon ground cumin and heat for a minutes. Add the greens, tossing with the oil until they just begin to wilt, about 5 minutes. Add a 14 1/2 -ounce can diced tomatoes (drained) and heat through. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serves 4. |

| Sink into sumptuous Italian dumplings Fri, 25 Apr 2008 18:27:00 EDT If your idea of comfort is a dish that's soft and warm, gnocchi is the food equivalent of a cashmere sweater. Italy's potato-and-flour dumpling, however, offers more than culinary hugs. Sauces turn these feathery light curls of potato into flavor bombs. |

| Grandma's Kitchen: A meatloaf worth doubling Yesterday while shopping I bought a little cornbread mix on sale, and I'm wondering if you might like to try my meatloaf recipe with the cornbread crust. This would be great with a crispy green salad and a baked potato. You might like to double it. I do. |
| Recipe of the Week: Sauerbraten Whitney Ballantine of Traverse City sent in today's recipe for sauerbraten, obtained from the Ox Yoke Inn in Amana, Iowa. "On their menu, they said, 'If you like what you had, ask us for the recipe.' I did and here it is." |
| Amish Cook: Dandelions herald spring We have enjoyed our first few meals of dandelion greens this season. Along with cooked potatoes and bacon, dandelions make for a good meal. Verena, 10, Joseph, 5, and Lovina, 3, have all discovered that they like them too. So far five out of our eight children will eat them. |

| Kate Lawson: Squeeze of lime is something to celebrate for a Mexican fiesta Thu, 01 May 2008 00:00:00 EST Cinco de Mayo is a day of celebration and food, and it has all of my favorite tastes and flavors. | Lynne Rossetto Kasper: A taste of heaven: Italian slow-cooked lamb and potatoes Thu, 01 May 2008 00:00:00 EST Dear Lynne: Spring is going nuts here, and the lamb is, as you would say, "just fabulous." So I need a do-head lamb dish that won't be tasteless mush or so spiced you can't taste the meat. Italian would be the bomb. |

| Pound cake adds a little nuttiness to the morning Thu, 01 May 2008 00:00:00 EST Like most people, when I entertain it's usually on weekends and most often in the evening. Every so often, however, I break this pattern, and last week was one of those times. I invited friends to come to an early morning coffee at my home to meet a young woman who had recently moved from Atlanta to our New England town. Although everyone worked, miraculously we were each able to carve out an hour on a Monday morning for the gathering. |

Health-conscious carnivores will love these lean and flavorful burgers I found by Blackwing Quality Meats. Rich in protein and iron, the 100-percent organic burgers also contain no antibiotics or hormones and have less calories and fat than skinless chicken and turkey. I found Blackwing Piedmontese burgers in a special freezer case at Nino Salvaggio for $7.99 for a package of four 4-ounce burgers. |

| In the Kitchen: Celery hints at romance, lovage I sent He-Who-Must-Be-Fed shopping with of list of needed items; including my preferred packages of celery. Spinach contributes to strong bones and when watching old-school Popeye cartoons, adds excitement to the upcoming fight between our hero and Bluto. Once Popeye grabs that can, then you know it's on and poppin'. |

She probably treasures them still. So, this Mother's Day, try a gift from the heart. | Food in the Wood: Wild edibles are delicious, but know what you're picking Many people forage for the romance of it all or because of the "back to nature" allure that fires an environmentalist's engine. However, as with the morel mushroom, northern Michigan's claim to epicurean fame, the quest may simply serve gastronomic cravings. |
| Foodie With Family: Homemade chips and dip If you want to impress someone but are low on cool tricks I recommend these homemade chips and dip. | Curtrise Garner: Welsh Rabbit is an English treat Thu, 15 May 2008 01:00:00 EST As a child, I remember my mother making what my brother and I called "cheese toast" in the toaster oven. It was better than a grilled cheese, in my opinion, and it was much faster since it was simply a piece of melted cheese on a piece of bread. |
